The Return of the King is an American-Japanese animated film from 1980 based on the third book in JRR Tolkien's trilogy The Lord of the Rings. The film was produced by Rankin / Bass and Topcraft. The film is often seen as the unofficial sequel to Ralph Bakshi's animated The Lord of the Rings from 1978. The film is also seen as a continuation of Rankin / Bass' film The Hobbit in 1977.
